Greek thermal bathing predates Greek philosophy. Hot springs run from Edipsos on Evia to Loutraki on the Corinthian coast and to Thermopylae on the road to Athens. Our Greek Curator's Picks pull from the historically continuous thermal sites still open to the public.
"Pánta rhei. Everything flows. Especially in a country built on a fault line."
The thermal-bath culture in Greece is older than Greece. Hippocrates wrote about Edipsos. The Romans expanded the thermal infrastructure across Asia Minor and the Peloponnese. The modern Greek thermal town keeps the same waters running through different bath buildings every two centuries.
Our gold list privileges the historically continuous public thermal sites (Thermopylae, Edipsos) over the resort spa hotels. Greece has more than thirty active thermal-spring sites; the gold list is the most accessible and culturally significant of them.
