The ranking is editorial and hand-made. Each venue is placed by judgement, not by a formula: what the place is, what tradition it belongs to, whether it is the reference example of that tradition, and whether it is somewhere worth crossing a country for. Review counts and ratings are consulted as a sanity check and never as the ranking itself, because they measure a city's tourist traffic at least as much as they measure a bath.
The chart shows the top 100. The full curated list is larger, 143 venues at present, and ranks 101 and beyond are published in the Gold list feed. Within a band of comparable venues the order alternates countries deliberately, so the chart reads as a world list rather than as one country's catalogue.
Two honest limits. There is no quarterly recomputation and no reader vote behind these numbers today, so no venue has moved between editions yet and movement indicators stay blank until there is a genuine prior edition to compare against. And the selection is one editor's judgement, informed by the dataset, not a panel's. Corrections and nominations are welcome; the list is meant to be argued with.
