America's sauna culture is borrowed and braided. The Finns brought it to Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Russians brought banya to Brighton Beach and Wicker Park. The Koreans brought jjimjilbang to Koreatown LA. Now a new generation is building social bathhouses (Othership, Bathhouse, World Spa) that take from all three traditions and add their own communal vocabulary.
